My Philosophy

I believe that teaching theatre extends beyond instructing students in acting, design, or playwriting- it shapes emotionally intelligent, well-rounded human beings. Skills learned in the theatre classroom, such as empathy, become lifelong tools for students. Content covered in my classroom is designed to be interdisciplinary, using art to reach students in meaningful ways that other subjects alone often can’t.

To support this mission, it is my first priority when working with a new group of students to build a strong classroom community full of mutual respect for one another. We must first feel safe physically, emotionally, and socially before we can learn and create. I strive to choose material that not only welcomes and reflects the students’ diverse identities, but also helps to broaden their worldviews. Each student will be reminded of the intrinsic value they contribute to our classroom culture. For example, students’ accomplishments and successes will always be celebrated through verbal and/or written feedback.

I design my theatre curriculum to be universally accessible and appropriately challenging to every student, no matter their unique learning needs. One way that this takes place in my classroom is through individual student goal setting and progress monitoring. By making my classroom student-oriented and centered, my students can take ownership and feel proud of their learning. For example, students help establish routines and expectations at the beginning of each course, which are revisited regularly to build trust and accountability. Whether they are performing, observing, or responding, students in my classroom are always playing an active role, and know what each of these roles entails. Overall, my teaching strives to create a safe space that not only nurtures students as artists, but as confident and compassionate members of their communities.
